How Air Source Heat Pumps Work

Air source heat pumps work by absorbing heat from the air. This heat is then used to heat your home through your radiators or underfloor heating system.

 

An air source heat pump is a very efficient way to heat your home. They can absorb heat even when the outside temperature is as low as -20°C. This heat is constantly being renewed naturally, saving you up to 70% on fuel costs and reducing harmful CO2 emissions by up to 66%.

 

The Heat they extract from the air is absorbed at low temperature into a fluid. This fluid boils into a gas which then passes through a pump where it is compressed and the temperature is further increased. This heat is then transferred into the water through a heat exchanger that is then circulated to heat your home.

1. Evaporation

Heat from the air is absorbed into a refrigerant liquid through the evaporator. Heating the refrigerant converts it into a gas.

 

2. Compression

The refrigerant is pumped into the compressor which compresses and pressurises the gas increasing the temperature.

 

3. Heat Exchanger

The heated gas is then passed through a heat exchanger where the heat is transferred into the water circuit. The refrigerant then goes through an expansion valve which releases the pressure quickly which converts the gas back to a liquid.

Do we need planning permission?

No, you do not need permission unless you are in a conservation area or a listed building.

 

Do I need an underfloor heating system for an air source heat pump?

No, modern air source heat pumps will work with traditional radiators although they may need upgrading. A full survey will be carried out to advise you of any changes or upgrades that might be required for your install.

 

How much money will I save?

This depends on a number of factors including size and type of property. We will provide you with a more accurate idea of savings once the full survey has been carried out.

 

What is the Renewable Heat Incentive?

The Renewable Heat Incentive or RHI is a financial incentive to encourage homeowners to move towards green technologies like air source heat pumps.

 

Why should I take advantage of the RHI now?

There is only £300 million available and whilst that might sound like a lot of money, the feed-in-tariff for solar of £900 million pounds was allocated in less than a year. It won’t be around for long.

 

How long will the installation of the air source heat pump take?

Usually, the install will be done in a day. The install team come fully prepared with the system being pre-wired and plumbed-in to simplify and speed up the process.

 

Can the heat pump cool as well as heat?

No, they are specifically manufactured to provide heat.

 

How often will I receive my RHI payments?

You will be paid your RHI payments quarterly.

 

How long will I receive RHI payments for?
